Week in Review – 1 October 2017

Race -36 weeks (Week 3 from “sign day”)

Well, this week marks 3 weeks down and 36 weeks to go! It’s been a doozy for “real life” and has thoroughly gotten in the way of the important things in life like swimming, riding and running! That being said, this has been a week (well, weekend at least) that has been all about living life and relaxing with those who matter. This is often far more important and having balance in life is going to be a huge challenge going forward as I work towards Ironman Cairns next year. If I cannot maintain balance I am guaranteed to burn out and have a sub par race and a sub par life, in short losing on all fronts. Not a happy thought!

Headed down to Moranbah for work, this ends up being a 12ish hour drive. While down there we had to cram 4-5 days worth of work into only 3 days due to no one being willing to work through to Saturday or even late on Friday as this weekend is a long one! Gotta love public holidays. Anyway, this led to 12-13 hrs per day worth of work  and going flat out on them. Plus side, we got 4-5days worth of work done in 3 days! Minus side, we did 4-5 days worth of hours in 3 days. This particular minus had been falling into bed rather early each evening and not running anywhere too fast. I also couldn’t make it to the pool, it wasn’t open outside of the hours that we were working!

Saturday evening Emma and I headed in to the local AFL stadium to see Elton John playing. That man can put on one heck of a show! Absolutely fantastic evening out. His set included plenty of his classics and all the songs I really wanted to hear live, namely “Rocketman”, “Candle in the Wind”,  “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues”, notable mentions go to “Saturday Night’s Alright” and “Crocodile Rock”. All up it was an absolutely stellar evening out! It did turn into a late night so I wasn’t moving anywhere fast on Sunday morning.

Sunday evening we had a belated anniversary night out at Aqualuna, the new restaurant at the Cairns Aquarium. This was an amazing experience, we were seated right in front of the tank located “under the pier” at the aquarium. The staff were amazing and attentive and truly made the night a wonderful experience for us. We ended up with degustation menu with a fantastic wine pairing. Of course a 7 course wine paired dinner doesn’t lend itself to getting up early in the morning but it was a fantastic way to end the week and keep Emma on board with all my silliness.

As far as training goes, I am glad this is the “off-season”! Not the time to turn the gas on, this is the time to enjoy life. One can’t be fit all the time!

Swim

Uh… None? This is turning into a bit of a trend……

Bike

One single ride this week with Jonathon. We headed up to the northern beaches via Barron Gorge and just generally looped around the place exhausting ourselves. Definitely a solid workout.

Managed a whole two runs this week. It was really really hard to get anything in between 13hr shifts and sleeping. Fun times!

Another low volume week just trying to minimise fitness loss. Hoping to ramp up a little bit more in the coming few weeks. Shall see how it all goes!
